Coventry man's role in the rescue of sailors in Yangtze incident

Hidden Coventry gets a first hand account of one Coventry sailor’s incredible story of his part in a notorious chapter in British naval history when, in 1949, Britain sent the warship HMS Amethyst up China’s Yangtze River to protect her subjects in Nanking from attack by communist forces who were rising up during the country’s civil war. The incident, which saw 40 crewmen killed, including the captain, was later featured in the film the Yangtze Incident which had the title Battle Hell in America. more
